Walden

adapted and directed by Nicholas Bone

so many keen and subtle masters

by Harvey Dimond

In March/April 2023, we restaged our seminal production of Walden together with a newly-commissioned response by visual artist Harvey Dimond at Fruitmarket, Edinburgh's gallery for contemporary art. Adapted from Henry David Thoreau’s account of his ‘experiment in simple living’ in the Massachusetts woods in the 1840s, Walden premiered at Stills, Edinburgh in 2008 and toured widely around the UK from 2009–10.

Artist Harvey Dimond’s response work, so many keen and subtle masters explored the subject of black ecologies in relation to Walden and appeared alongside the performances.

Walden and so many keen and subtle masters were presented as part of our residency at the Fruitmarket from January–March 2023. We also developed and performed a new work We Will Hear The Angels in January 2023.

The script for Walden is published and available to buy direct from us.

Reviews

Full of meditative intelligence, and quiet power.
The Scotsman
Not one lifted body from the benches, no phones pulled out of pockets – a room full of humans sitting and appreciating one another and the company they have kept whilst watching this powerfully significant remoulding.

All Edinburgh Theatre
