Two atheist sons of clergymen explore how to disagree with someone you love, inspired by Edmund Gosse’s Victorian memoir Father and Son. The play examines the relationship between a book-loving son and his clergyman father, exploring the gulf that emerges when the son cannot share his father’s evangelical Christian beliefs.
Both writers — sons of clergymen themselves — seek answers to fundamental questions about faith, family, and disagreement. Our Fathers is an honest, often humorous exploration of what happens when the people we love most hold beliefs we cannot share.
Inspired by Edmund Gosse’s Father and Son (1907).
