Walden

Adapted by Nicholas Bone from a book by Henry David Thoreau

Adaptation of Henry David Thoreau’s classic meditation on self-sufficiency and simple living. On 4 July 1845, Thoreau walked into the woods near Concord, Massachusetts and built a hut by Walden Pond, living there for two years by his own resources. This beautiful, simple distillation explores the individual’s relationship with the environment and the desire to ‘live deliberately’.

Originally created at Stills Gallery in Edinburgh, Walden has been performed more than 70 times across multiple revivals. The production received a Best Design nomination at the 2008 CATS awards and continues to resonate with audiences seeking meaning in an increasingly complex world.

Based on Walden; or, Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau (1854).
